Question: Where is the Keith clan from Scotland?
Answer:
Following the coronation ceremony of Charles II in 1651 at Scone the seventh Earl William was sentenced to the Tower of London. The prisoner remained there until Restoration in 1651 when the new King appointed him a Privy Councillor and then Lord Privy Seal in acknowledgement of his family's hardships. Keiths also were responsible for securing the Scottish crown jewels that were hidden on the Clan's lands throughout the Civil War, hence one of the Clan's principles was "What is lost is secure."
Unsurprisingly, it is not surprising that the Keiths are Jacobites. In the year Forty-five, the Tenth Earl and his son James surrendered their castles, lands and titles. The brothers then went on to have successful careers in foreign countries. The earl later became one of the few Jacobite Knights of the Garter and also received the highest honors of Prussia which was The Black Eagle. James was awarded the Russian Imperial Order of St. Andrew by Catherine the Great.
A Keith was named Knight Marischal during the visit of King George IV to Edinburgh in 1822.
